Here's the latest...
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the latest installment to hit theatres this weekend, and it is an exciting ride. Taking place about a few years later after No Way Home left off, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has made himself.a name for being the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, taking down bad guys wherever he hears crimes in progress. Most of the city enjoys his presence. Meanwhile, Parker is still coming to grips with the consequences from the previous movie, where his best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), and most importantly, his love MJ (Zendaya), have forgotten him and their prior association with him. The film captures how this is also affecting his physical self, with the stress bringing out more........animalistic traits, shall we say....While encountering threats in his quest to reduce crime, many notables from Spider-Man’s rogues gallery make their appearance. Some are very well known and definitely give Parker a worthwhile fight, while others make their live-action debut in the film. Throughout this, a character, portrayed by Sadie Sink, makes their appearance as a special threat to Spider-Man, an unseen force not even the local authorities could handle, and threatens everything Parker holds very dear to him.Composer Michael Giacchino, who previously has done soundtracks such as Star Trek, Up, and the Medal of Honor game franchise, was assigned to compose for the film. In a discussion on the “Musical Anatomy of a Superhero” at San Diego Comic-Con, Giacchino explained how he thought about removing specific musical notes from the Spider-Man theme, to represent “pulling away all the pieces of his life” that Parker doesn’t have anymore. The soundtrack captures this perfectly throughout the film, particularly the pivotal moments.Destin Daniel Cretton, the new director in the Spider-Man franchise, brings an amazing job directing this film. It is an emotional story throughout, almost a coming-of-age for Peter to understand his feelings while learning to control the side effects his mutation brings. Cretton also managed to leave plenty of room for action, and the amount of combat here did not disappoint, even in the final portions of the film. Marvel fans will recognize the references to other parts of the MCU, while not needing to rely on TV shows or other MCU films too much to follow along. Certain other characters could have been streamlined into the story, but overall this has been one of the best films in the Spider-Man series Holland has done to date. The right amount of action, emotional story-telling, all without one drowning out the other. Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived in theatres Jul. 31.Rating: 9.5/10
