Game Over for Game Discs? Sony Hits the Eject Button
Sony plans to stop making physical Playstation game discs by 2028, shifting entirely to digital downloads as most players already buy online games. While the move is convenient and saves money for Sony, many gamers are upset as they worry about losing ownership, game collecting, and the ability to buy or sell used games.

Here's the latest...
For nearly 30 years, Playstation gamer have enjoyed a simple ritual. you walk into a store, grab a shiny new game, peel off the plastic, and slide the disc into your console. Then you spend the next several hours fighting dragons, racing cars, or somehow losing to your brother in FIFA. Now, Sony is preparing to change all of that. Sony recently announced that it plans to stop producing physical discs for new Playstation games beginning in January 2028. Instead, all new Playstation games will be sold digitally through the Playstation Store and other online retailers. Games released before then will still exist on disc, but future releases will live entirely in the digital world. Recent reports say about 80 percent of Playstation games sales are already digital, which helped convince Sony to make the switch. For some players, the new was not a big deal. Many younger gamers already buy their games online. They like the convenience of clicking a button and having a game download while they make a snack or scroll through social media. Digital games also mean no scratched discs, no lost game cases, and no need to leave the house in pajamas just because a new game came out. But for many longtime fans, the announcement landed like a blue shell in Mario Kart.
The reaction online was immediate and loud. Social media filled with complaints, memes, and debates. Some gamers compared the decision to the end of video rental stores. Others joked that future generation will think game discs belong in museums next to the IPOD and VHS tapes. One of the biggest concerns however, is ownership. When people buy a physical discs, they actually have something they can hold. They can lend it to a friend, sell it later, or display it on a shelf. The issue became even more concerning after Sony recently removed hundreds of purchased movies and television shows from users’ digital libraries because of licensing problems. Some gamers worry that if digital right can disappear, then owning games digitally might not feel like ownership at all. Another large concern is money. Physical games often become cheaper over time because store compete with one another. Used game store also allow players to trade in games and buy secondhand copies at lower prices. In a digital only world, Sony has much more control over pricing. A growing backlash has even resulted in legal challenges and consumer complaints in some countries . All in all this does not mean physical media will disappear. A petition asked Sony to reconsider has gathered well over 170,000 signatures within days of the announcement. In a way this now feels like an end of an era. This on the tail end of Sony also dropping hundred of jobs and several studios as well. For now gamers still have time. Obviously, none of this will begin until 2028, giving people plenty of time to get the games they want and to possibly start that long awaited collection. One day, an older gamer will tell the next gen about those amazing midnight launches.*The Hunter’s Cabin does now own the rights to any media used*
