Star Wars: Zero Company is coming out next month, but people got to see a preview of the game, and some behind the scenes discussion at San Diego Comic-Con! Moderated by Michael Peyton of IGN, the panel showcased some cutscenes and limited gameplay, with discussion about the story from Bit Reactor's Narrative Director Aaron Contreras, Creative Executive Kelsey Sharpe at Lucasfilm Games, along with voice actors Jonathan Freeman (Hawks), Dee Bradley Baker (Trick and the Clone Troopers), Vic Michaelis (Runa) , and Rekha Sharma (Fathom)From what's shown at the panel, you have a wide array of customisation with your main character, Captain Hawks. They can be played as male or female, and of nearly any known species in the Star Wars galaxy. You can also choose customisable characters for your party, or use the characters for the story. The panel discussed the backstory for some of the characters, and how it fits into the overall narrative. Captain Hawks, voiced by Freeman (Erica Luttrell voices the female counterpart), is a disgraced former Republic officer who gets recruited to lead an independent covert operations unit to conduct black ops missions with a a ragtag group of mercenaries and misfits, to combat a new threat from the Separatists. Trick, aka Clone Trooper CT-3301, voiced by veteran voice actor Baker, is a clone trooper that got reassigned to a desk job after an injury sidelines him, but with his skills at sleight of hand, gets "reassigned" back to the field, with Zero Company. The panel discussed how part of the story for Trick will have references to the infamous Umbaran story from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show. One cutscene showed a tense interaction between Trick and his Umbaran teammate, Luco Branc (voiced by Jason Spisak).For Baker, who has voiced the clone troopers, he is used to taking part in projects about the Clone Wars era, most recently Star Wars: The Bad Batch.. Voicing the clones once again in another story, set in this era, provides a better perspective.Runa Blask, voiced by Michaelis, is an NPC support character, but a former Separatist now assigned to Zero Company to help handle their finances. Much of her exchanges with Hawks appear to be very combative, even sassy at times. Runa is more with Zero Company out of necessity than anything else. One of the cutscenes discussed handling a debt to the Hutts, another sub-plot in the game. To emphasise the Hutt involvement in the game, Gorga the Hutt will make an appearance, voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson. Kundri Fathom, voiced by Sharma, is the head of the Infinite Coil, the main antagonist of the game. The Infinite Coil is a Separatist faction that operates more like a "paramilitary cult," according to her description at the panel. They plan to release a plague on the galaxy, and create a new order in the aftermath. Sharma is no stranger to being a villain, having played as villains in Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, and other projects. Working in Star Wars is "next level" for her, and she looks forward to becoming just as a good, if not better, a villain than Vader and Maul.The panel briefly talked about also how some of the actors engaged in performance capture, or PCAP. Sharma explained how it was different working in a smaller, more intimate setting, compared to working on a movie set or in theatre with many people. Baker was the only actor who never used PCAP, having only operate in the studio for voicing his lines, never trying the visual motion capture before. The actors were not told they would be auditioning for a Star Wars video game until the last minute, but for the three actors new to the universe - Freeman, Michaelis, and Sharma - it is an immense honour and they were please the footage shown captivated the audience. Towards the end, the rest of the voice cast was announced, including Matt Lanter reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker from the TV show. They also revealed that the soundtrack, composed by Grammy-award winning Gordy Haab, is currently out on all music streaming platforms and available to purchase Aug. 27. A $300 collector's edition was also revealed, containing a steelbook, patches, character cards, pins, a deskmat, a replica Black Series thermal detonator with lights and sounds, among other things.Star Wars: Zero Company comes out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Windows and Steam on Aug. 27.
