Here's the latest...

According to a new report published by [MP1st], a new Killzone project has entered the very early stages of production, signaling the first sign of life for the franchise since Killzone: Shadow Fall in 2013. Minus the little tease we get from Helldivers adding Killzone themed cosmetic packs.
As detailed by MP1st, Guerrilla Games is rumored to be collaborating with an external, third-party studio to spearhead the development of the new title, while Guerrilla itself maintains a oversight role. Sources indicate that the project is likely a remake or remaster of an earlier entry in the series with many speculating a ground-up reimagining of the original 2004 PlayStation 2 title Killzone. While the external developer has not been confirmed, industry observers and Twitter (X) Detectives point to the studio People Can Fly ( the devs behind Bulletstorm, Outriders and a few others) as a prime suspect, following their previous announcement of a partnership with Sony on a project codenamed Project Delta, which is based on an established PlayStation IP. Suspicious? I think not! The likely decision to outsource the project likely stems from Guerrilla Games’ current workload. Guerrilla is focused on expanding the Horizon universe, working on a third mainline entry as well as navigating setbacks with its multiplayer title, Horizon Hunters Gathering. Which they have decided to basically rebuild from scratch after community feedback. By partnering with an outside studio, Sony might be thinking it can revive Killzone without pulling Guerrilla away from its Horizon flagship franchise. However, take all of that with a grain of salt. It was said before that Blue Point Games had pitched Resistance, Infamous, and Killzone remakes previously and got a hard NO, then that studio was shut down. In my personal opinion, it doesn't make much sense to tell a in house studio, no. To then shut them down and third party a revival out. Who knows, maybe with Microsoft pushing for big exclusives Sony is taking note and wanting to bring back some of the titles that helped make them what they are today. When Killzone debuted on the PS2, Sony famously touted it as PlayStation’s answer to Halo. While it faced pressure to live up to that label, the franchise carved out a massive, dedicated fan base across the generations of PlayStation consoles thanks to its grim atmosphere, graphical fidelity, and iconic Helghast antagonists. In today’s gaming landscape, Killzone should be a massive priority for Sony. Currently, PlayStation has a noticeable void in its first-party line-up; a high-budget, cinematic, first-person shooter. With Xbox’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard (and with it, Call of Duty) alongside its ownership of Halo, Sony massively lacks a home-grown flagship FPS to anchor the PS5 ecosystem. Rather than viewing Killzone as a minor legacy project or a quick nostalgic cash-grab, Sony should position a resurrected Killzone as a tier-one franchise. Like what is being done with Metal Gear Delta and Resident Evil, or even Tomb Raider. The series possesses rich lore, an recognizable aesthetic, to PlayStation fans. As well as a dark sci-fi universe capable of competing with the biggest shooters on the market if given proper funding and marketing. While fans are eager for the series to return, a central question remains; can a modern Killzone capture the magic of the original game? Let us know in the comments below! Killzone, particularly Killzone 2 and Killzone 3, was defined by its visceral, heavy movement mechanics and weight-filled gunplay like Gears of War. Unlike the floaty, lightning-fast movement seen in modern shooters, Killzone made players feel like grounded infantry soldiers fighting through oppressive, brutal environments. If an external studio like People Can Fly (known for high-speed, arcade-style action) takes the helm, there is a risk that the signature "heavy" feel of Killzone could be streamlined or sacrificed to fit modern twitch-shooter trends. People Can Fly seems to have a hit or miss track record with games, but we have seen their talent is undeniable.
The original Killzone titles succeeded because they leaned into a dark, gritty, moral ambiguity centered around the conflict between the ISA and the Helghast. In an era dominated by battle royale, extraction modes, hero-shooters with bright cosmetics, and live-service monetization a revived Killzone must avoid losing its core identity. To hold true to Killzone, any remake or reboot must maintain the series' signature oppressive atmosphere, industrial art direction, and dark narrative undertones. Which we know is possible as shown with the Capcom Resident Evil remakes, Halo, Oblivion, and recently Black Flag.
The MP1st report offers a glimmer of hope for PlayStation fans who have waited 13 years for the Helghast eye-lights to glow red once again. Whether this early-stage project turns out to be a faithful remake or a broader reboot. Bringing Killzone back could fill the FPS gap in PlayStation's library, provided the development team remembers what made the series special in the first place. I say, that the very least fans deserve a solid remaster bundle of the first 3 games. So that is if done right, we would only need at least 1 to have multiplayer.
