The Controversial Post from PlayStation
On July 1, 2026, the official PlayStation X (formerly known as Twitter) account would make a startling post that would cause readers to become outraged. While this account would normally post content relating to upcoming titles or expected additions to already released titles, this particular post would not be listed under that same category. In this post, it would simply state "Important Updates", with two different links provided to two newly published articles: "News on physical discs for new games" and "News on PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita". The first link would announce that Sony would stop disc production in January 2028, which would result in hundreds of thousands of Users commenting under their post to share their disappointment in Sony and how the company used to emphasize sharing physical games with other players, owning their games. The second link would announce that Sony planned on slowly closing the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita, with all countries closing the Store by July 2027, meaning any digital content from the PlayStation Store on those platforms will be permanently inaccessible.
PlayStation's X post discussing the future of physical discs as well as the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita
The main reason behind stopping physical disc production, according to Sony, was due to "trends in consumer preference" referring to how most players prefer to purchase their games through digital media rather than physical copies of video games. The comment section underneath their blog post would total over 9,000 comments from users upset by their recent update. As for the reason behind the closure of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, their main explanation was tied to "updated payment processing standards", which those platforms are not capable of supporting future updates. The plan for their sequential closure of the stores would be as stated:
Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026.
Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026.
In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.

What to buy from PlayStation Store (PS3/PS Vita)
With the unfortunate news of the PS3 and PS Vita having plans to shut down the PlayStation Store, there will be a lot of digital-only content that will be affected by this change. This digital content can relate to DLCs for specific titles or video game titles that only had a digital release. Therefore, it's important to know what kind of content players should purchase from these Stores before they are gone for good. If there are players who want to take advantage of this store before its closure, keep these elements listed below when deciding on potentially purchasing from the PlayStation Store.

#1 Digital-Only Game Releases (Check Online)
Unfortunately, numerous games do not have the budget to release a physical version of their title and are stuck remaining as a digital-only release, which means if they were ever delisted or in the event of the store shutting down, the game would become completely unobtainable. The only way players would be able to access these titles would be purely dependent on whether the player had purchased the title before its removal. Before immediately buying a title on the PS3 or PS Vita store, make sure to verify if there exists a physical version for the specific title desired. If a physical version of the game does exist, it is highly recommended to purchase the physical version instead of digital, as the digital version of the game will only provide players with a license for the title, which is a different type of ownership compared to owning the disc.
#2 Downloadable Content (DLC)
Outside of digital video game titles, there's another aspect of digital media to account for: the downloadable content for those titles, also known as DLC. Unlike video game titles, the majority of DLCs are purely digital and can only be purchased through the PlayStation Store. The best example of these DLCs can be seen through the numerous content drops for the Call of Duty Franchise. For titles like Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 (2011), they consist of four main DLC packs that contain both new multiplayer maps and a new map for their Special Ops Mode:
Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 (2011) Collection 1
Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 (2011) Collection 2
Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 (2011) Collection 3: Chaos Pack
Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 (2011) Collection 4: Final Assault
These types of DLC packs were a big factor for several Call of Duty titles, from Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® to Call of Duty®: Black Ops 4. What makes these packs very important is that some of these DLCs could be directly tied to trophies/acheivements. In the worst-case scenario, players may be incapable of achieving all the trophies the game has to offer, due to the shutdown of the Store, removing all possibility of completing the title. Here are the main aspects to keep in mind for DLC content:
1.
Check if the DLC has trophies attached to the game
2.
Make sure to own the game before purchasing any DLC
3.
Avoid purchasing cosmetic-focused DLC, unless the player has funds to afford them (Cosmetics, Skins, Emotes, etc.)
As long as these three elements are accounted for when deciding on DLC, then players will be able to make the best financial decision for purchasing digital content from the PlayStation Store. Since these stores are older, most of the items found on the digital store will have no discounts and will easily increase in price after a couple of items are added to the cart. Make sure to take advantage of the store quickly, or else there will never be another opportunity for players to capitalize on these old PS3 and PS Vita titles.
Why It Matters
This update matters to trophy hunters because new releases, platform changes, subscription drops, and community trends can affect what players choose to play, complete, and discuss next.
