After Electronic Arts completed an acquisition for 55 Billion Dollars with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, many changes to the direction of the company were planned. Electronic Arts (EA) is one of the top ten largest video game companies in the world, originally founded in May 1982. Millions of players may recognize this particular company if they have played any sports-related games over the past two decades, such as 'Madden', 'FIFA', and 'NHL' titles. These sports games are released yearly, mainly with a roster update and the inclusion of new and/or returning game modes seen in prior titles.
Outside of sports-centered games, they also have developers who make other genres of games, such as the developer team known as BioWare. BioWare was founded in 1995 and have developed some of the most well-known franchises in the gaming industry, such as 'Mass Effect' and 'Dragon Age'. While the 'Mass Effect' titles were focused on a futuristic space setting, 'Dragon Age' titles honed in on an old-school fantasy approach seen in Dungeons & Dragons. These games were specifically known for the branching dialogue options that players can choose, which added an extra layer of depth to character relationships and affected how the game is played moving forward.

Change of Ownership and Direction
On August 5, 2026, Electronic Arts (EA) had been planning to have a transfer of leadership through an acquisition with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund for an astonishing $55 billion, which would give them a major role in the company's future financial decisions. One of these decisions would appear on October 21, 2026, when it would be revealed that about 400 employees had lost their jobs and BioWare would unfortunately be closing, with all projects they had planned coming to a halt. While EA has a history of shutting down developer studios, the closure of BioWare left fans with mixed reactions about how to feel. One of their recent titles was called "Dragon Age™: The Veilguard", and reception to this game was very mixed, as players either enjoyed it or really disliked it when directly compared to the prior games in the franchise. The other factor was the last game they developed back in 2014, called "Dragon Age™: The Inquisition", which was received very positively by fans based on written reviews for the game. This opinion would be emphasized in the announcement post of the studio closure by the official BioWare X Account, as the majority of the replies revolved around users making fun of the closure through edited images or directly commenting on their lack of surprise based on their actions.

The Future of EA
With the loss of 400 jobs and the shutdown of a studio, it is unfortunate for those who have spent months to years working for the company. The main reason behind the studio closure of BioWare was the lack of return on the games they were working on when directly compared to the budget given to work on the title. The games moving forward will still emphasize the sports genre, as they make a wide portion of their revenue with pack openings tied to each of their entries. Since the acquisition happened almost three months ago, it's still fairly early to determine the long-term results of how this change will affect the quality of studios and projects moving forward; only time and public reception will showcase the outcome.
